While we have already started hearing whispers about Microsoft Windows 9, the company has officially acknowledged a spring release for Windows 8.1 Update 1 with much demanded features like the ability to boot directly to the Desktop by default and the capability to minimize Metro apps making them behave like regular Desktop app which users are familiar with. Incidentally, a build of Windows 8.1 Update 1 has already got leaked onto various file sharing website with all new major changes including booting straight to the desktop, the menu bar on Metro apps with mouse-and-keyboard friendly behavior for non-touch device users.

The much awaited final version of the free Microsoft Windows 8.1 update is now available for download, If your PC is currently running Windows 8 (or Windows RT) all you need to do is to open the "Windows Store" and you’ll see this free update prominently featured on the home page. If not, you must get the KB 2871389 update (which should be already downloaded and installed if using automatic updates) and install it manually and check again.

As expected the first preview of Windows 8.1 is out now for public download. To be released as a free update to Windows 8 later this year, this pre-release version is now available for downloading to early adopters.

Microsoft has finally posted a video walk-through showing what to expect from the upcoming Windows 8.1 update. The video features highlights of new features and improvements of Windows 8.1 scheduled to be released later this year as a free update for Windows 8 customers. This "first look" video for Windows 8.1 addresses improvements and enhancements in personalization, search, built-in apps, Windows Store, and cloud connectivity aspects of the operating-system update.
