Bluetooth 5: 4x Range and 2x Speed

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced the release of Bluetooth 5.0 which will be an upgraded version of the current Bluetooth 4.2. It is expected to be released by the end of 2016 and will bring a whole lot of new and upgraded features that will change the way how we use Bluetooth.

Bluetooth 5.0

What is New in Bluetooth 5?

One of the basic questions that everyone is asking is that what is new in the Bluetooth 5 and how it is better than its successor Bluetooth 4.2?
There are quite a few notable improvements in the new release. One of the best and the most talked about among them is the massive increase in the range. The range is expected to be increased four times. This will allow Bluetooth devices to pair even from a fair distance. The data transfer speed is also expected to increase two times which will allow you to transfer data smoothly and quickly among devices.

At this moment, the range of Bluetooth 4.2 devices is 100m so with the update this will move to 400m approximately. The current data transfer rate is one Mbit per second, this will jump to 2 Mbit/s.

Theoretically, this is a significant increase in range and speed, but we have to wait and see if this actually translates practically.
Besides, there are several other features that will be introduced with the new release. Some of the prominent updates include 800 percent increase in the capacity of the connectionless data transmission, rich data transfer will be possible, and a connectionless model will be introduced for easy connection of devices.

Above all, Internet of Things connections will become a reality with the increase in the range and the speed.

How Will It Impact The End-Users?

The release of new features will improve user-experience to a significant extent. Massive increase in range and data transfer rate are the features that end-users have been waiting for years. The last Bluetooth update was released in 2014 and since then, things have moved very fast in the IT industry. Everyone was waiting for a big news from SIG including end-users.

The increase in the broadcast capacity will impact the lives of the end-users in the sense that they will be able to experience connectionless services with extreme ease. Think of location-based information services or navigation services that use your location, it will not be an issue after the update.

The new release will be introduced by the end of the current year at the latest. The release can jump to 2017 if things do not move smoothly. The only question that you should ask yourself is that whether you will be able to use the new release on your current device, as this is something that is still a mystery.

The Bluetooth 5, with its looks, seems very powerful. We have to wait and see if SIG will really be able to provide all these promised features and updates with the new release. Let’s keep your fingers crossed and wait for the best.
