Registry Hack To Enable Security Updates For Windows XP Till April 9, 2019

One of the most successful operating-system of all times - Microsoft Windows XP went "End-Of-Life" on April, 8th, 2014 leaving users with vulnerable systems as no updates including critical security-patches will get issued by Microsoft in future to "general" users. However, the company will be providing security patches to users enrolled under their "Windows Embedded POSReady 2009" program and below shared registry hack will let any "Windows XP" user receive the same patches for free till April 9, 2019.

Windows XP EOL

To apply the hack, create a text file with a .reg extension and the contents below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

Merge the above registry code by double-clicking in Windows Explorer and then run Windows Update, which will find several updates confirming the successful activation of the hack.

Hi there, I am at a loss to understand the instruction "Merge the above registry code by double-clicking in Windows Explorer".
Surely this code needs to be installed in the registry?
I would really like some clearer instructions.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Read carefully again, you missed the first part:

Create a text file with a .reg extension and the contents below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

Here all detailed steps for all:

1. First you create a text file (in notepad) and save it with any name but extension should be " .reg "
2. For example: abc.reg or hack.reg or Obama.reg (as you like)
3. close the file.
4. The term "merge the code" means "double click" the file to run the file.
5. When you double click file, computer will ask you "do you want to add the information to registry?".... Press YES.
6. Computer will automatically update registry / merge your code automatically in registry folder.
7. Your job is done .... congrats....
8. Now run "Windows Update" by any one options:
8a. start - control panel - update
8b. right click "my computer" - properties - update

9. Confirm your registry task (step 4) by checking registry manually. follow these steps:
9a. start - run - type "regedit" - enter - new window opens
9b. on left window find folder with HKLM name (HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE),
9c Open HKLM to get sub folder i.e.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ WPA \ PosReady
9c. open sub folder and see your changes there in file.

Hurray .... you did it..... We did it .... We did it.

Wonderful news. I installed. I also sent out a tweet to alert others to your news.

Querries.
1. Should the text file name be - WinXp-Update2019.reg - Is this okay.

2. Where should I place this file - I mean any specific drive/folder. At present it is on desktop.

3. How to merge it with Windows Explorer. When I open Explorer, will it automatically pick it.

Jerome Segura, senior security researcher for Malwarebytes (makers of a security suite that continues to protect Windows XP), noted that one of the big draws for such a hack is its simplicity. "It only takes adding one registry key, and all of a sudden, Windows updates thinks you are running an XP subversion." But he noted, "Users that apply the hack will see patches that are not going to be released for the XP mainstream version, such as an important security update for IE8."

Segura believes if Microsoft doesn't explicitly block this work-around, "we may also run into a parallel and unofficial stream of fixes for XP, developed by enthusiasts, much like in the mobile space with, for example, jailbroken iPhones running Cydia."

When trying out the hack, Segura was able to obtain a security update for the Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 (KB2932079), which could in theory be applied by hand to an XP system. But two others were OS-level updates specifically written for WEPOS, including a fix for IE8 running on that platform.

Of course MS themselves is also saying it's a bad idea. If you are willing to take the chance that these updates will bork your XP install, I guess it's worth a shot.

What updates LoL, they will not make any more updates, you can enable security updates until 2050 if you want and still wont get any more updates. Think god dammit, think ... Is time to let go XP already lol and stay away from Windows 8 is dangerously shitty :)

he's so f##king right, open your eyes you stupid people

We do have some foul mouthed people up here. There are about 50% of companies that are still running WinXP. Microsoft is providing updates for them but they are supposed to be paying for them. This hack is letting you get them for free. If people want to run WinXP what is to you or me or anyone else? WinXP is only 32bit but it was and is a great OS.

Thanks to The Helper. Don't know what I did wrong initially, but recreated the file and ran it and it installed instantly. Many thanks for your patience and precise an concise instructions.
