Open Office 3.0 Released, Crashes Server Due To High Demand

Sun Microsystems released the latest version of their cross-platform, free, open-source office application suite - Open Office 3.0, the unprecedented demand for the latest version crashed the servers and Sun Microsystems has to run a stripped down version of the site to control the situation for now.

Available for a number of different operating systems like Microsoft Windows, Linux, Solaris, BSD, OpenVMS, OS/2, Mac OS X and IRIX, the free Microsoft Office alternative supports Microsoft Office 97-2003 formats and ability to open Microsoft Office 2007 new xml based file formats including docx, xlsx and pptx.

The full free office application suite includes:

  • Writer - OpenOffice word processor application looks and feels identical to the popular Microsoft Word, the utility also includes built-in ability to export files to popular Portable Document Format (PDF), the new version of Writer allows display of multiple pages at once.
  • Calc - OpenOffice spreadsheet application similar to Microsoft Excel, the new version expands the old 256 column limit to over 1,000 and now includes improved network collaboration tools.
  • Impress - A presentation program similar to Microsoft PowerPoint with additional capabilities to export presentations to Adobe Flash (SWF) files.
  • Base - A database program similar to Microsoft Access.
  • Draw - A vector graphics editor comparable in features to early versions of CorelDRAW.
  • Math - A tool for creating and editing mathematical formulae, similar to Microsoft Equation Editor.

I have downloaded the 3.2.1 version of Open Office for the mac, however, I can't open the application because it has an extension that Mac's don't recognize (e.g. rather than Any suggestions?
