Bhuvan - The Google Earth Killer Is Coming

After creating history by launching India's first moon mission Chandrayaan I, Indian space agency ISRO is all set to challenge Google Earth with it's own satellite mapping service dubbed "Bhuvan", the IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) image portal will provide satellite images similar to Google Earth and WikiMapia but with more precision and frequent updates, currently Google Earth provides single-layered images with zoom levels up to 200 meters and images updated every 4 years in-contrast Bhuvan will provide multi-layered images with zoom levels up to 10 meters and images being updated every year.

While announcing the service ISRO Chairman, G Madhavan Nair, said:

"With Bhuvan we will be able to produce very local information which will be specific to only to our own country. This information available from this mapping system will be useful in addressing very local problems like floods, famines, infrastructure development, education and much more"

"The information on Bhuvan will be layer wise and the options of viewing filtered information will be available. Inputs from a lot of local players, like farmers, fishermen and likes who know the local area in and out, will also being integrated in Bhuvan. This is for the primary reason to make it of more use to the general public,"

ISRO expects the service to be launched in next six months by March 2009, all the infrastructure and softwares required for the service is already in place and a prototype of Bhuvan should be ready by end of November.

UPDATE : Bhuvan finally available for download, click here.

it is Shareware or Freeware :D and Some improvement in Feature or Same as Google Earth...

Bhuvan is free but you just can download and use. First you have to register yourself in Bhuvan's portal then you can able download pluggins. Yes, it is better than google earth. How?
1)Google Earth Zoom level upto 200 Mts. while Bhuvan's 10 mts.
2)Google - Single layer information. Bhuvan's multi layer.
3)Google - No alternative viewing option. Bhuvan - have.
4)Google use: International satellites. Bhuvan's :Indian satellites.
5) Google: Image upgrade rate: Slow. Bhuvan: Frequent.

However, Bhuvan is still kid but we can say: Google Earth killer is here :)

What is the difference between Shareware or Freeware?

Its will be an Free online service like Google Maps and Wikimapia.

I'm not that happy about this though. We have enough problems with terrorists and militants. If anyone can see India at incredible detail, this could be bad for us.

And, would it take pictures of other countries in similar detail ?

In this day and age, there are many outlets out there for such info. Can you put Genie back in the bottle?

Dear brother,
I appreciate your sincere concern for our motherland. JAI HIND. But brother, do you think that terrorist use the google etc to plan attack!! They can as well come down to various places in person disguised and roam around like any other citizen. So instead of stopping technology to grow, find out methods to identify those guys who are out there along with you and me....planning their next move. Please do not blame google or Bhuvan for the terror attacks. Mumbai attacks inside Taj etc ....was it due to google?? No. We have to UNITE and fight....and force the government to act STRICTLY against the terror. JAI HIND

i am totally agree with Knowmonger after mumbai atteck by terrorist.

i also agree that security risk will rise with such software. after terrorist attack on mumbai.

It should be in low resulotion

guys....If we always scared about disasters we cannot make innovations in tech.....

We have enough problems with terrorists and militants. If anyone can see India at incredible detail, this could be bad for us.

i also agree with Bhuvan.....

HUBLI

Stop TALKING, let WORKING

By this not only their will be details of India but we can know details of Other Coutries and it can help a lot

I think It's very good invention by ISRO.
we have to do some thing new(like bhuvan) to stop terrorist activity in our country.

I wait for bhuvan to see nazca lines in high resolution images.

Congratulations ISRO !!! I'm waiting for it !!

Good that we are progressing and competing with the products launched like google earth by other countries.

It will be great and if launched professionally without any glitches.
Secondly security risk is everywhere. When you come out out of your house everyone can see you and thiefs can rob, it would be laughable solution to close their eyes. Progress is inevitable and if you are scared you can not live in this world. Maybe the higher resolution version can be licenced to insititutions but this is also a eyewash.

Will Bhuvan have an API? like Google earth API?

guyz here plz not to worry. steps if u want to use "bhuvan"
1. u have to register with ISRO,
2. a valid photo i.d. required e.g pan card, voter id, DL. etc
3. u have to upload ur latest photo to ur profile on isro.
4. high resolution images are only available for citizens if india only(registered users).
5. whatever u r browsing will go through a special cell.
6. browsing to any public area (mkt, tourist place, etc) & govt areas ( parliament house, R.P. bhavan etc) regularly by any user or by any IP address will be banned & noticed). there are many other things done for security purpose. so dont worry. ISRO is smart enough.

Can't wait to see my old home in bhuvan. :)

It will be fantastic for us who stay far form home (NRIs) to often see our country and home...! Security, we should taken care of at ground and eh skies..!

Bangalore: The Indian Space Research Organization ( ISRO) has launched Bhuvan , a mapping application website like Google Earth, which promises to give better 3 D satellite images of India and provides India specific features. The scientific community of the country also remembered the father of the Indian space program, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai on his birth anniversary. Bhuvan, which means earth in Sanskrit, allows users to see any part of the subcontinent barring sensitive locations such as military and nuclear installations. The 3 D mapping tool uses images taken a year ago by ISRO's seven remote sensing satellites, including Cartosat-1 and Cartosat-2. The satellites can even capture the images of objects as small as a car on a road. Bhuvan displays satellite images of varying resolution of India's surface, allowing users to visually see things like cities and important places of interest looking perpendicularly down or at an oblique angle, with different perspectives and can navigate through 3 D viewing environment. The degree of resolution showcased is based on the points of interest and popularity, but most of the Indian terrain is covered up to at least six meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters from Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWifs). Bhuvan maps up to 10 meters compared to 200 meters of Google and 50 meters of Wikipedia. Hyderabad based National Remote Sensing Agency ( NRSA), which is a part of ISRO, had a lead role in designing and developing 'Bhuvan'. "We were extremely enthusiastic and right from the word go our focus was that it should be useful to users in India," said V Jayaraman, Director, NRSA. The features include: Access, explore and visualize 2 D and 3 D image data along with rich thematic information on Soil, wasteland, water resources, superpose administrative boundaries of choice on images as required, visualization of AWS ( Automatic Weather Stations) data/information in a graphic view and use tabular weather data of user choice, Heads-Up Display ( HUD) naviation controls ( Tilt slider, north indicator, opacity, compass ring, zoom slider), navigation using the 3 D view pop-up menu (Fly-in, Fly out, jump in, jump around, view point), drawing 2 D objects (Text labels, polylines, polygons, rectangles, 2 D arrows, circles, ellipse), drawing 3 D Objects (placing of expressive 3 D models, 3 D polygons, boxes), snapshot creation (copies the 3 D view to a floating window and allows to save to a external file) Advanced functionalities which will be provided in the future are urban design tools, contour map and terrain profile. Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chairman informed that the space agency had started the preparations for a mission to Mars within the next six years. It was looking at launch opportunities between 2013 and 2015.

can we view parts other than our great india, like google earth???...hope they dont make too many restrictions in using the application or else people will be less interested..then again google might be developing sophisticated technology right now to increase the stake at this friendly compition.isro should work with US,europe also in this field.

Terrorist r being invited by bhuvan coz now they can see everything in india

I am happy to welcome BHUVAN!!

Can we interface the GPR coordinates with embeded gadgets and BHUVAN?

how to proceed to use BHUVAN?

It's great to know that we have vast field of knowledge and ability to do and us ethe latest technology in our daily life, which is good example as this website is gonna be launched. But we(indians) have not having a very good security system, so it's not really a good idea to lauch such products in the market for every one, which could be more harmful, as if go into the bad hands. As we know all , that it could happen, so pls don;t launch this , for the sake of all our Indians.

Please give me link for bhuvan

Welcome Bhuvan

Thanks ISRO

the ISRO peoples are stil updating the site and fixing broken link probs and perhaps in runtime...so poor even see to that.

if u are unable to download bhuvan from ISRO site try this link :

http://www.megaleecher.net/Bhuvan

I appreciate the work done by ISRO, Long live

i would like to have dis Bhuvan google earth viewer. so that can i download it for free?:P

Hi,

I used it but problem with zoom. I could see my house more clearly in google than Bhuvan.

I live in New York. Security is tights since 9/11, haven't had a terrorist attack here since then although attempts have been made. On the down side, we had to give up some of our freedom. Now cops can search your bags randomly if you enter the subway system, sometimes you see soldiers with automatic weapons in heavily populated areas, which they won't be able to use unless that area is cleared of civilians, therefore I think it's for training more than anything. The cops train regularly for terrorism scenarios, and according to the newspapers, the NYPD even has expanded its jurisdiction to other countries in order to scope out possible attempts to attack the city. I think India can do something similar, on your own terms.

i m used in bhuvan is so best software

cogratulations isro......

this would have been a great news in 2008 :P

can any one tell me the api of bhuvan ??? & also is it free or we have to pay for it ??
