MagicPlay - The Open-source Apple AirPlay Alternative For Audio Streaming Over WiFi

Apple AirPlay is a proprietary protocol that allows supported devices to wirelessly stream audio, video, and photos complete with related metadata between devices. With various manufacturers releasing AirPlay-only Wi-Fi speakers, the technology enjoyed it's dominance since it's inception in 2004 as AirTunes (named AirPlay later) in the Wi-Fi music streaming market while non-Apple device users have been left out in the cold.

A new open-source technology MagicPlay aims to change that by providing the first standardized music streaming protocol over WiFi. The BSD-licensed open source reference implementation allows any app developer or hardware manufacturer to integrate this their products. Miracast and Wi-Fi Direct (Intel WiDi) are two other contenders in this niche but are limited to specific devices supporting Wi-Fi Direct.

The success and failure of this depends only how the protocol gets adopted by third-party device manufactures like wireless speakers, TVs, car audio systems and other connected devices. MagicPlay has done it's part and OEM's now need to simply embed their open source component to there devices, the source code for MagicPlay is already out now for app developers so they can support wireless audio streaming to MagicPlay connected device. MagicPlay works on all chipsets, regardless of manufacturer, and is built using Qualcomm's AllJoyn framework.

Hi Deepesh thanks for the post here, really interesting article. It looks like the MagicPlay system is really flexible in what can connect to it. It's really handy it being this accessible with so many devices out there, that's the true measure of a quality device when it can cater for so many other platforms. The fact that this Wireless music system operates over a Wi-Fi connection makes it a better option to many other devices which us Bluetooth. Thanks for the post!
